Where’s it going?

How’s it going?

Common courtesy dictates such a question when greeting. This might be sufficient as far as niceties go, but rather insufficient when referring to Northern Colorado.

It’s not difficult to look around and get a rough idea of how things are going in the area. You might notice a few more help wanted signs on the way to work, the coffee shop on the corner closed, but there is a new restaurant vying for the location. These little indicators give us an idea, but prompt a bigger question: Where is it going?

After all, Larimer and Weld counties are thumping with activity.

We happen to have the county with the highest foreclosure rate in the U.S. (I didn’t say the thumping activity was all good). Interestingly enough, next to that county is the No. 1 ‘Best City to Live’ for 2006 as voted by Money Magazine (I didn’t say the activity was all bad either). We’re making huge alternative energy advances by building corn-to-ethanol plants despite the fact that we’re about to enter our eighth year of drought. We have major educational institutions, an almost equal ratio of hospitals to residents, and the most heavily trafficked artery in Colorado running right down the middle.

Just like Colorado’s weather, the answer to how Northern Colorado is doing changes every five minutes. However, attempts to predict where the happenings in the area are taking us or what it all could mean is possible with the right data and information, which I believe I have.

So next time go ahead and ask me how it’s going, but don’t be confused if I come back with where it’s going.
