Weld County to host land-use workshop

WINDSOR – Thirty-five Weld County community leaders, including mayors and county commissioners, are planning to participate in a three-day land-use workshop May 17-19.

Called “Your Town: Citizens’ Institute on Rural Design” and sponsored and funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, the workshop is aimed at helping leaders better understand emerging land-use issues such as rural subdivisions, water re-allocation, town edges and merging municipalities, according to Weld County planner Brad Mueller.

“Specifically, we’ll be examining rural subdivisions, water as it relates to the rural landscape and town identifiers,” Mueller said, noting that in southwest Weld County, in particular, expanding cities and towns are nearly growing together.

Mueller said the effort is part of the county’s goal of updating its comprehensive land-use plan, a year-long process now under way.

The workshop will help leaders cope with potential conflicts in land use as cities and towns grow closer together and municipalities interact with the rural community, Mueller said.

Speakers will include Rob Lang, co-director of the Metropolitan Institute at Virginia Tech in Alexandria, Va., and researcher of the new “megapolitan” concept, which describes how and where the next 100 million U.S. citizens will live in the next 30 years.
