Xcel Energy seeks $244.9M rate hike over four years
Xcel Energy Inc. (NYSE: XEL) is seeking to raise electricity rates by $244.9 million over a four-year period.
The Denver Business Journal reports that the Minneapolis-based utility filed the requested rate hike with the Colorado Public Utilities Commission on Tuesday. The proposal calls for increasing electricity rates by an average of 2 percent a year from 2018 through 2021. That would mean increases of $1.73 for residential customers and $2.68 for small businesses over the course of four years.
Xcel cited implementation of “smart technology,” infrastructure investment for new and existing customers, faster depreciation of coal-fired power plants, and use of new technology and tools as reasons for the increase.
The PUC will hold public hearings on the plan, with a decision expected next year.
