UNC selects Aurora-based general contractor for $73.6M project

GREELEY —The University of Northern Colorado announced Thursday that it has selected Aurora-based Adolfson & Peterson Construction to be the general contractor for the university’s $73.6 million Campus Commons building project.

Adolfson & Peterson Construction has overseen projects at UNC in the past, including additions or renovations at Ross and Turner halls and the Bank of Colorado Arena at Butler-Hancock Athletic Center.

The company will work with the university and Denver-based design firms Semple Brown and Handprint Architecture, selected in August.

“The Commons is a crucial element in delivering on our promise to students and a critical component of our growth strategy,” Kay Norton, UNC’s president, said in a prepared statement. “With the design firms and general contractor on board, we’re on track to start construction next summer.”

A committee of faculty, staff and students has been created to ensure campuswide engagement in the process, gather feedback and communicate with campus and beyond.

The Campus Commons will be a support hub for students, a showcase for UNC’s music and musical theater programs, and a gateway to UNC. In addition to space for a fully integrated student support operation, it will include a 600-seat performance venue, 400-seat multiuse auditorium, art gallery and student-run cafe.

The project is being funded through a combination of state capital funds, bonds supported by a student capital fee and private donor gifts.

The Commons will be located south of the University Center, near the intersection of 11th Avenue and 22nd Street, and will be designed to work in tandem with the UC.
