What are the health benefits of gardening?

One reason I recommend gardening is that homegrown produce simply tastes better than store-bought. And it’s actually healthier. The processing, transportation, and storage of vegetables can have a negative effect on the vegetables’ nutrients. For example, the Vitamin C content in kale from the market is likely to be much lower than what you’d pick in your backyard.

Not only are vegetables a good source of vitamins and minerals, but they’re also great for maintaining a healthy weight. Even though they’re 70- to 90-percent water, they help satiate your appetite. They’re also packed with fiber, and high-fiber diets are proven to help decrease the risk of colon cancer.

Gardening can also be a healthy activity for children. What’s better than handpicking cherry tomatoes or snap peas to munch on as an after-school or post-pool snack? For an organic garden-to-table selection of produce, your backyard is a great place to start.
