Tech behind crowdfunding platform developed in Fort Collins

BOULDER – A new online platform for raising funds for ideas generated by University of Colorado students will launch in June, using technology developed in Fort Collins.

EmpoweredbyCF, a platform created by Fort Collins business owners McCabe Callahan and Blue Hovatter, will power CU-Boulder Crowdfunding, which will help eight pilot projects launched on May 2 seek funding to reach the next step in their respective efforts.

EmpoweredbyCF was developed for CommunityFunded.com, a Fort Collins-based crowdfunding website founded by Callahan and Hovatter. Colorado State University used the program beginning in 2013 to host its own crowdfunding site for student projects.

The CU-Boulder Crowdfunding website will stay open until June 14, according to a release Wednesday.

CU has adopted online giving in hopes of leaving behind the “slow, disengaged” donations methods of the past, according to the release.

The founders of EmpoweredbyCF hope to form similar agreements with other universities nationwide.

“We project that hundreds of universities will adopt this technology in the coming years, and we are poised to continue as the platform of choice,” Callahan said in a statement.
