$3.5 million in federal transportation money slated for Rocky Mountain National Park

The U.S. Department of Transportation has allocated $3.5 million to repair roads in Rocky Mountain National Park damaged by the flooding last September.

The funds will come from the Emergency Relief for Federally Owned Roads Program and will go toward permanent repairs of Old Fall River Road and for the Alluvial Fan area, according to a release from the office of democratic U.S. Sen. Mark Udall.

“This important investment will ensure that the park is able to rebuild and continue to support mountain communities this year and into the future,” Udall said in a statement. Udall serves as chairman of the U.S. Senate National Parks Subcommittee.

Rocky Mountain National Park and the tourism industry in Estes Park both suffered following the historic flooding, which damaged not only roads within the park, but also Highways 34 and 36, which serve as main roads into Estes Park, which relies heavily on tourism to sustain the local economy.
