Funds sought for food bank worker made homeless by flood

A Weld County Food Bank employee’s house, and everything in it, was washed away in the flood waters the day after he paid it off.

Glenn Smithey of Evans had taken nine years to pay off his mobile home, which wasn’t covered by flood insurance.

Smithey has worked for the Weld County Food Bank for more than nine years as a driver of the mobile food pantry that takes food to people in need on a weekly basis. The day after his house washed away, Smithey arrived at the Food Bank to help move food trucks to higher ground, fearing they too would be washed away by the flood waters.

Those close to Smithey are asking for help for the Weld County man and his wife, and have started a “Friends of Glenn” campaign asking for monetary donations. They are hoping to raise $20,000 for the now homeless couple.

“Our goal is to raise $20,000 for him to purchase clothing, household items, and assist with housing needs,” friend of the Smitheys, Chalice Springfield, said in a statement. “It’s lofty. But I know we can do it.”

Individuals wishing to give a donation can do so one of two ways: 1) write a check payable to Glenn Smithey c/o Cache Bank and Trust, and mail it to 4601 W. 20th Street, Greeley, CO 80634, or 2) donate via PayPal, enter friendofglenn@gmail.com, this will route to the bank directly.
