“For large Western brands with a presence in China, understanding what is happening on Sina Weibo is just as important as understanding any social media channel in English speaking locales,” Gnip president and chief operating officer Chris Moody wrote in a blog post.

“With 500 million Internet users, China has the largest population of Internet users on the planet, and there are 300 million people using Sina Weibo that are potential customers for Western brands having conversations that shouldn’t be missed,” Moody wrote.

Ikea and Nike are among the international brands using Sina Weibo, and its most popular personality is Chinese actress Chen Yao, who has more than 17 million followers, according to Gnip.
