An introverts guide to surviving Bixpo
It’s Bixpo time! On Sept. 17, the extroverts will be in networking heaven all day at the Embassy Suites in Loveland. For the less socially inclined, great big confabs like Bixpo can be a stressful experience. Here are my suggestions to help introverts make the most out of the Northern Colorado Business Report’s Bixpo or any other large networking event:
Set an intention
Do you want to discover green vendors, gain new clients, scope out possible employers, or educate yourself on new businesses in our region? Some people simply want to collect 20 new business cards. Me? I want to have two meaningful conversations with individuals I have never met before. And, I would like to reconnect with two long-lost colleagues. Clear goals will keep you focused!
Keep it real
I teach workshops to help job searchers create zippy elevator speeches. Sometimes people who speak in sound bites and give polished 30-second commercials can be annoying. I just ain’t buyin’ whatever it is you’re sellin.’ I prefer authenticity to slick hooks and one-liners. Just be you.

Give generously – expect nothing
One of the best ways I know to avoid networking jitters is to adopt an underlying attitude of generosity. You aren’t asking for anything! Instead, look for people you can help or serve. Take someone under your wing and let him or her tag along while you mingle. Connect people who you believe will mutually benefit from the introduction. What goes around comes around!
Listen!
You don’t have to do all the talking. Others are generally quite happy to give you their spiel. Ask questions. Be sincerely interested in learning about what others are doing in their businesses.
Follow up
Two days after the event take time to send an e-mail to the folks who made a positive impression on you. Invite the person to Link In, suggest a coffee date, or express gratitude for the information they offered and share actions you are taking as a result. I love it when people express sincere interest in helping me reach my goals so you might express a similar sentiment.
Networking does not have to be icky. And extroverts are not the only people who are good at it. Introverts can be excellent at making connections as long as they honor their personal strengths and style. It’s Game On at Bixpo I hope to see you there!
