A Personal Manifesto

I have had a personal mission statement for years. It sits on my desk and serves as a guide to what goes on my calendar, how I care for myself and others, and to the type of work I choose to do. I update it annually although it has remained very much the same for the past five years.

I recently wanted to adopt a new habit and I decided to create a personal manifesto to help me in my efforts to make a significant change in my life. The manifesto is not a replacement for my larger mission statement. It is simply an action plan for a very specific set of behaviors. It is an energizing tool to help me focus on my desired change and to help me avoid falling back into my old ways.

A manifesto, by definition, is a statement of principles or intention. Even the word itself seems to inspire action. Manifesto! If you have been contemplating change but have failed to get started, consider creating a manifesto. Write it down. Proclaim it aloud. And then let it guide you along.
