What Do You Do to Deserve Your Paycheck?

This is a question that we should all be able to answer in a compelling manner. Sorry, but showing up on time does not count as a strong response. It is a given that you will be at your desk ready to work on time each day.

Being able to answer this question can help you whether you are currently employed, considering making a change, or actively job searching. Consider how much easier it will be to navigate the following situations if you have a solid answer all prepared.

  • Negotiating a salary increase
  • SPONSORED CONTENT

  • Nailing the interview
  • Seeking a promotion with increased responsibilities
  • Requesting tuition assistance
  • Networking
  • Standing out from the crowd during a phone screen
  • Listing your accomplishments on a resume or cover letter
  • Getting approval to go on a sabbatical (yes, people still do this)

There is no doubt that this is a tough question to answer. I will give you a clue. Figure out how you impact profit, people and the planet. If you can tie your answer to these three things, you should be home free. And no, working 12-hour days doesn’t count either. Come on. Why should your employer hand you a paycheck this week? What have you done this week to deserve getting paid?
