Yes, it is all about M.E.

So, if this thing is all about M.E. — as in Managing Editor, as opposed to Medical Examiner or Mechanical Engineer, but maybe Middling Expectations — what does an M.E. do?

At a major metropolitan daily, the M.E. is the supreme commander of the newsroom, sometimes even called the Executive Editor (isn’t that fancy?). An M.E.’s day is all about directing the controlled chaos that gets a rolled-up conglomeration of dead trees and ink on to your porch in time for your first cuppa in the morning, marshalling an ever-shrinking army of copyeditors, assistant editors, staff writers, freelancers, page designers, graphic artists, photographers, and now, Web gurus toward a common purpose: Get information out to readers right as well as right now.

According to the Committee of Concerned Journalists this person is usually in charge of the day-to-day operations of the newspaper. … If there is a big mistake in the day’s paper, you might want to contact this person.

Thanks, CCJ — the e-mail address here is news@ncbr.com.

Here at the Business Report, the editorial process proceeds at a more leisurely pace, but what it’s all about is the same: Deliver a quality news product in a readable format. Because we arrive in subscribers’ mailboxes every two weeks, and we’re all about covering business news in Northern Colorado, we usually miss the mad dash to the car wreck or the mob scene at the photo op.

What we do instead is try to tell a bigger story, all about the Larimer/Weld County region, about the economy and where it’s headed, and about the people in business who are shaping both. We strive to be as informative and as accurate as possible, and want to hear how we’re doing, either through comments here or at the e-mail above.

What I’ll be doing here, besides trying to make the internal NCBR trains run on time, is answering your questions all about our content, sharing thoughts on business and the profession of journalism in the 21st century, and linking to thought-provoking items, like this one from Wired, on exactly what we’re getting into with all this blogging.
