Magellan Center seeking $3.5 million to fund winners

LONGMONT ? Magellan Center is seeking $3.5 million to fund emerging businesses in Colorado.

The Longmont-based think tank is writing grant proposals to secure funds for the 17 winners it chose as part of its Colorado Catalyst2 ? Exponential Potential for Entrepreneurship and Innovation program.

The proposals are for programs and initiatives designed to help emerging businesses with revenues of $1 million to $20 million.

Magellan Center hired Susan Malone-Back, president of Denver-based Research Consultants LLC, to write the grant proposals.

Colorado Enterprise Fund will handle the money as it comes in, said Magellan Center Chief Executive Officer Pamala Gibson. ?Our role is to organize, contract with the grant writer, and once we get funding, to manage the quarterly reports. At the end we will write the summation.?
Magellan also will facilitate quarterly meetings and write press releases for the group, Gibson said.

Gibson hopes to be able to begin receiving grant money early in 2006.

Malone-Back will target organizations that fund economic-development projects, including the Carnegie Corp., Rockefeller Foundation, Ford Foundation, Mellon Foundation, MacArthur Foundation and duPont Fund, along with Wells Fargo and JPMorgan Chase, Gibson said.
