Rehab hospital eyes Northern Colorado

A New Mexico-based company is considering construction of a 40-bed post-acute care hospital in Northern Colorado, most likely in the vicinity of Interstate 25.
An executive for Ernest Health Inc., which is currently building similar hospitals in Las Cruces, N.M., and Brownsville, Texas, confirmed the company’s interest in the region.
“We recognize the dynamic health-care market of Northern Colorado, including Fort Collins and Johnstown and Loveland,´ said Darby Brockette, CEO of Ernest Health. “We are excited about the possibility of participating in such a dynamic market.”
Brockette declined to be specific about Ernest’s timetable for establishing a Northern Colorado facility.
“We are cautiously optimistic we’ll be able to serve the community at some time in the future,” he said.
Ernest’s selection strategy appears to be evident.
Both Las Cruces and Brownsville are known as popular retirement communities. Similarly, the Fort Collins-Loveland area has gained a reputation in recent years as a retirement Mecca. The publication “Retirement Places Rated” picked Fort Collins-Loveland in 1999 as the No. 1 retirement location in the country.
If Ernest builds in Northern Colorado, it would follow the wave of new assisted-living and nursing-home facilities now on the drawing board for the region. At least four such senior citizen communities are under development in Larimer and Weld counties.
Post-acute facilities provide rehabilitation care for patients who require long-term treatment for injuries or strokes. Ernest’s facilities will also feature recovery care for heart attacks, brain injuries, spinal-cord injuries, orthopedic conditions, cancer and pulmonary conditions.
