Banner to keep lid on 2003 budget

GREELEY — Banner Health Colorado plans to shave $688,000 in overhead costs from its 2003 budget.

The dollar amount represents the typical year-to-year inflationary costs for Banner, said Scott Bosch, CEO of Banner Health Colorado.

The goal is to keep regional overhead costs flat from this year to next, maintaining the $18.3 million Banner Health Colorado budgeted for overhead in 2002, Bosch said.

The targeted costs are in support services like human resources, finance, planning, marketing and information systems.

Banner Health Systems manages the North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley and owns and operates McKee Medical Center in Loveland.

At an NCMC Board of Directors meeting on Tuesday, Bosch said the effort is part of Banner Health Systems’ nationwide plans to reduce $11.5 million in 2003 overhead expenses.

“We’re looking at ways we can be more efficient and reduce redundancy,” Bosch said.

While no jobs will be lost at the local level, Bosch said 41 people from the company’s Phoenix headquarters were affected and another 35 positions there would be eliminated through attrition.

Locally the savings will be realized by leaving certain open positions unfilled, cutting back on capital expenses, reducing advertising budgets and consolidating systemwide communications work with Phoenix, Bosch said.
