In mid-December, Major League Baseball informed the region that the earliest start date for the proposed Rocky Mountain rookie league would be the summer of 2001. News of the postponement shocked few of the region’s fans; excitement is still riding high — but then, so too is the rash of rookie-league rumors.
The Eye widened at the latest of these:
A Jan. 12, 2000, article in the Greeley Tribune stated that four of the region’s vying communities will be paired with affiliates from four professional teams: the Colorado Rockies, Arizona Diamondbacks, Chicago White Sox and “New York Giants.”
The news by our friends at the Trib conflicts with earlier reports that the fourth team would be the San Francisco Giants, and not a professional football team.
