STK spokesman Reid resigns to seek work with non-profit

LOUISVILLE — David Reid, a spokesman for Storage Technology Corp. for the past eight years, has left the company to pursue a career in non-profits.

Reid, who was StorageTek’s public relations manager, says he’s been interested in changing careers for awhile. He told StorageTek executives that he wanted to resign in January, but he was asked to stay through June.

Gary Ferguson, senior public relations manager, assumed some of Reid’s duties as of June 30 and says the department is in transition. He did not know whether Reid would be replaced. Reid, 47, says he is “targeting some major areas” such as New York, Washington and San Francisco for his next venture.

Reid, who did not leave StorageTek under terms of the voluntary separation, called the move “a personal career choice.” Issues concerning the company’s products, lawsuits with other companies and fluctuating profits had little to do with the decision, he says.

“The final product of that is very satisfying to me,” he says of working for non-profits. “There’s some stage in your life when you think about doing something completely different and something very much for you as opposed to what’s the interesting professional challenge. I’ve done a lot of different things.”

Before Reid joined StorageTek in 1991, he was executive sports editor for the Denver Rocky Mountain News and a vice president for Wells Communications, now Johnston Wells, a Denver-based public relations firm.
