Lafayette author sets out to help you sell yourself
LAFAYETTE — “Let me introduce you, to you. You’re good at what you do, and you’re committed to becoming better. But chances are you’re not as good at telling others how good you are. In some ways, you are your own best-kept secret.”
So begins Fred Berns’ business self-help book, “Sell Yourself! 501 Ways to Get Them to Buy From YOU.”
Berns, it seems, wants to help you let the cat out of the bag.
The Lafayette-based speaker/consultant/author believes, and rightly so, that the best way to sell one’s services or products is to start with selling oneself, and the rest will logically follow. In his guide, he says readers can double sales and income through effective self marketing. He encourages readers to be memorable and communicate with confidence.

As Berns puts it, “Sell Yourself!” is full of “low-cost/no-cost ways to make and leave a positive impression on those you need to influence.” Through 10 basic steps, designated by chapters, Berns chronicles just what it takes to sell oneself in today’s business environment.
Each chapter gives great detail on how to attain one’s goals through self promotion by using motivational quotes and explicit instructions on how to stand out from the crowd. At the end of each chapter is “Action Ideas and Tips,” a review and checklist for each previous step.
Tips on replacing everyday language with “Victory Vocabulary,” building resumes, customizing one’s “commercial” (the image one sends to others), getting publicity through self-promotion and marketing as well as through networking, offering one’s services to help others, and much more fills this informational guide.
In all, the book is probably a smart buy for anyone interested in improving his business and image. It is available by calling Berns at (303) 665-6688. It is also at the Boulder Book Store and the Tattered Cover Book Store in Denver, where it was on the business best-seller list in April and October.
