Gravel company purchases 379-acre parcel in Evans

EVANS — Varra Companies Inc., a sand, gravel and concrete company based in Frederick, closed recently on the $3.35 million purchase of 379 acres within the Evans city limits.

Varra bought the land, which includes six contiguous parcels, from the Conrad Capital Group LLC. The land is at 14822 Weld County Road 396, bounded roughly by 54th Street Road on the north, the Platte River on the south and east, and on the west by a straight line running south from the end of 65th Avenue.

Officials at Varra did not return calls requesting information on how it plans to develop the property. The family-owned business is based at 8120 Gage St. in Frederick, and it has Ready Mix locations in Greeley, Fort Lupton, Erie and Denver. It also has sand and gravel locations in Greeley and Platteville, and a recycled materials location in Longmont.

Sean Wheeler, Evans’ city planner, said his office has not received a development plan from Varra Companies, but has been working with three other owners who have property within the planned unit development area to amend an annexation agreement that would describe specific uses.

Wheeler said the owners are working on a draft plan but a public hearing has not been scheduled. Wheeler said the Evans City Council has requested an update on the progress between the land owners at a May 19 public meeting
