EWI names Todorov technology leader, hires Erion away from city of Loveland

LOVELAND —  Ohio-based EWI, a high-tech manufacturing consulting, training and testing organization, announced Tuesday that Evgueni Todorov was named technology leader for nondestructive evaluation and be in charge of  applied research and development activities in advanced process monitoring and quality-assessment technologies at EWI Colorado, a new center in Loveland that is expected to be operational this fall.

EWI Colorado also hired Marcie Erion of Loveland as a business-development specialist. While Erion was a business-development specialist for the city of Loveland, she was instrumental in attracting EWI to Loveland and helped assemble a $6 million incentive package funded by the city of Loveland, the state’s Office of Economic Development and International Trade and federal grants through the Colorado Advanced Manufacturing Association’s FourFront Colorado initiative. Each of the three entities provided $2 million, with Loveland approving its funding in October.

WomenGive, a program of United Way of Larimer County, was started in Larimer County in 2006 as an opportunity for women in our community to come together to help other women.

Erion has 25 years of experience in economic developoment. She will plan and execute regional sales efforts, develop relationships with partners and stakeholders, and manage member relations functions at the Loveland-based facility, the company said in a prepared statement.

“Marcie has proven economic development expertise and strong ties throughout the Rocky Mountain manufacturing region,” EWI’s vice president of marketing and sales Chris Kiminas said in the statement. “She will be an integral part of our team and will serve as the main point of contact for our clients, partners and stakeholders.”

Loveland’s mayor Cecil Gutierrez said in the prepared statement that Erion’s “work will be beneficial to the city and to the economy of the entire region. We look forward to working with her as EWI grows its center.”

EWI will occupy 14,000-square-feet at 815 14th St. S.W. in the Rocky Mountain Center for Innovation and Technology, the former Agilent Technologies campus that has been idle for the past five years.

Todorov will relocate from EWI’s headquarters in Columbus in early summer to start building the center’s advanced quality-measurement capabilities.

EWI, formerly known as Edison Welding Institute, uses engineering and technology to develop, test and implement advanced manufacturing methods for a variety of industries, including aerospace, automotive, defense, energy, government, heavy manufacturing, medical and electronics.

The nonprofit organization is sustained from contract fees paid by companies tapping into its services. EWI’s presence is expected to attract companies to lease space at the 800,000-square-foot campus that has five buildings.

Todorov has more than 30 years of experience in the development and industrial application of nondestructive evaluation and electronic measurement technologies. Since joining EWI in 2004, his main focus has been advanced and specialized methods and techniques for a broad range of applications.

In 2014, EWI was hired to operate the Buffalo Manufacturing Works in Buffalo, N.Y., a facility created to support the growth of Western New York’s manufacturing sector, as part of the Buffalo Billion initiative to spur economic-development opportunities in the region. EWI initially was housed in a building purchased by the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus with an $8 million Buffalo Billion grant from Empire State Development. The agreement stipulated that BNMC provide, at no cost, space to house EWI for its startup operations and also provide $800,000 startup funding support for EWI.
