Carroll began selling Volkwagens in Boulder in 1965 and relocated to Fort Collins two years later when Volkwagen decided to open a new dealership.
As part of its anniversary, the company has helped raise $45,000 for the United Way.
Ed Carroll has a number of employees who have been with the company for decades including one, Jack Robinson, who has worked with the Carroll for 47 years. Robinson started washing cars for Ed in Boulder and moved with him to Fort Collins.
Ed Carroll began selling VWs in the early 1960s. After working for corporate VW for several years, he was awarded a new VW agency in Boulder, making him the youngest VW dealer in America at the age of 27.
Two years later, VW announced it was opening in Fort Collins and Ed flipped a coin and took the Fort Collins dealership and left the Boulder dealership behind.
Ed had studied civil engineering at CSU and wanted to be back in Fort Collins. He met with then First National Bank President Tom Gleason and, with the shake of a hand, Ed Carroll Motor Co. was created.
Today, John Carroll, son of Ed and now president of Ed Carroll Motor, is the United Way of Larimer County Campaign chair and, as part of the 45th anniversary and re-grand opening of the VW dealership, the company helped raise the $45,000 to United Way.
Contractors that worked on the building, along with First National Bank, Davinci signs and Peterson Carpet, among others, all contributed $22,500 and Ed Carroll Motor is matching this amount to donate the $45,000.
Tonight’s anniversary celebration will also mark the introduction of the new Beetle.
