Poudre Valley Hospital to begin demolition for expansion in May

FORT COLLINS – Poudre Valley Hospital aims to begin demolition on its A Wing in May following submittal of its final development plans to the city of Fort Collins for a $102 million expansion.

The University of Colorado Health hospital will build a two-story, 150,000 square-foot addition to replace the hospital’s older A Wing. The structure will have the capacity to add two additional levels for a total of four stories in the future.

The hospital has submitted its final development plan to the city, which will review the plan before UCHealth can begin demolition on the 70,000-square-foot Wing A. The Fort Collins Planning and Zoning Board has reviewed and approved the plans.

Platte River must prepare for the retirement of 431 megawatts (MW) of dispatchable, coal-fired generation by the end of the decade and address more frequent extreme weather events that can bring dark calms (periods when there is no sun or wind).

“We are currently submitting the permit paperwork, which is the final step,” UCHealth spokeswoman Kelly Tracer said.

The first floor of the expansion will include an expanded emergency department for greater efficiency and patient safety. A lower level will contain lab and other support services while an upper level will house an expanded orthopedics unit and space for future growth.

Additionally, UCHealth will build a new parking structure north of the emergency department as well as a rooftop helicopter landing pad to get patients to emergency care quicker.

The hospital has submitted its final plans for a first round of reviews by city departments after which a second round of reviews will follow, said Ted Shepard, chief planner for the city.

The expansion will open next year, according to UCHealth.
