Local unemployment inches up

DENVER – Unemployment inched up in the state and Northern Colorado in June.

According to the latest data from the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment, the unemployment rate for Colorado in June was 7.6 percent — up from 7.4 percent in May and 5 percent in June 2008. Nationally, the June unemployment rate stood at 9.5 percent.

For the Greeley metropolitan statistical area, the unemployment rate was up from 8.3 percent in May to 8.8 percent in June. Similarly, the Fort Collins-Loveland area saw an increase from 6.1 percent to 6.6 percent from May to June. In June 2008, the unemployment rate for Greeley was 5.4 percent and for Fort Collins-Loveland was 4.4 percent.

Despite the increase, there appears to be some relatively good news.

“Colorado’s unemployment rate rose in lockstep with the nation’s from September to March, although since March, unemployment in the state has stabilized while the national rate has continued to climb,” pointed out Donald Mares, executive director of the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment, in a prepared statement. “Colorado has experienced one of the smallest increases in the unemployment rate in the nation from March to June.”
