Colorado health-exchange sign-ups climbed 8 percent vs. last year

DENVER – Connect for Health Colorado, the state’s health-insurance marketplace, saw nearly 12,000 more people sign up during this year’s open enrollment period than a year ago, according to new figures released Tuesday.

Sunday marked the deadline for open enrollment.

From Nov. 1 to Jan. 31, 211,579 Coloradans signed up for coverage either through private health insurance through the exchange, Medicaid, or Child Health Plan Plus, Connect for Health officials reported. Of those, 153,383 came through the exchange, up from 141,639 during last year’s open enrollment period.

In addition to the medical plans, Connect for Health also enrolled 25,604 people in dental plans.

While open enrollment has ended, individuals and families whose health-insurance providers no longer offering health plans in their areas – or because they had a policy last year that no longer meets minimum legal requirements – have a special enrollment period that allows them to sign up for new coverage for 2016 through Feb. 29.
