UCHealth Family Medicine Center food pantry fills need for food support

As the economic effects of COVID-19 continue, many people struggle to afford groceries. The UCHealth Family Medicine Center (FMC) food pantry, which partners with Food Bank for Larimer County, helps provide fresh, healthy food to those suffering from food insecurity.

The food pantry has been able to meet our population’s need for nutritious food through the generosity of our community. Individuals, corporations and foundations provide monetary and food donations.

In 2020, the FMC food pantry has served, on average, 367 unique families each month and distributed over 3,000 pounds of food every week.

“In September, we had our highest numbers to date,” said Laura Elliot, program coordinator. “We had 968 visits and served 1,093 individuals from 450 households. As COVID-19 continues to progress and we see more detrimental economic effects, we anticipate our numbers to continue to rise.”

Recently, a new food pantry client sent a note of thanks for the help she received to feed her family of four. Her husband lost his job due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and stocking their kitchen with healthy food had become challenging, even with his unemployment benefits. At the FMC pantry, she selects from a preprinted list of foods available that day.

“I was thrilled after my first pickup at FMC. We received ample fresh vegetables like cabbage and squash, fruit, eggs, meat, cheese, bread, and yogurt. The food from the FMC pantry is making an enormous difference to my family. From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much!”

Donations of food are also accepted and can be dropped off during food pantry hours:

  • 9 a.m.–3 p.m., Tuesdays and Wednesdays
  • Noon–5 p.m., Thursdays
  • 9 a.m.–noon, Fridays

The most needed food items are canned tuna/chicken, peanut butter, canned vegetables, pasta, canned soup, dried beans, rice and baby food.
