Building Commissioning – The New Normal

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 40% of all domestic energy use is consumed in residential and commercial buildings – roughly 40 quadrillion or 4.0 x 1016 BTUs annually!

Overall, research shows that non-commissioned buildings use significantly more energy to operate than commissioned buildings. Interestingly, commissioning costs are, on average, recouped within a five-year period. Beyond energy savings, commissioned buildings also benefit from reduced change orders during design and construction, longer building and equipment life, lower operating and maintenance costs, and perhaps most importantly, improved environmental quality for building owners and occupants.

This explains why the City of Fort Collins is among a growing number of municipalities and states requiring buildings to be commissioned by an experienced and certified Commissioning Agent.
