Boulder laser maker KMLabs raises $5.5M funding round

BOULDER — Laser manufacturer Kapteyn-Murnane Laboratories Inc., could grow by 10 to 15 employees over the coming year in the wake of a new $5.5 million funding round.

The Boulder-based firm disclosed the funding in a regulatory filing this week.

KMLabs co-founder, president and CEO Henry Kapteyn said he couldn’t yet comment on the funding specifically, though further details are expected to be released next month.

KMLabs makes custom laser systems for research applications that it sells mostly to universities and research institutes.

Kapteyn and board chair Margaret Murname, both professors in the physics department at the University of Colorado, co-founded KMLabs in 1994 in Washington before moving to Colorado in 1999 and beginning to commercialize its products in 2000.
