University of Wyoming breaks ground on energy facility

LARAMIE – The University of Wyoming began construction Monday on a $53.5 million energy research facility that will focus on oil and natural-gas extraction.

The 90,000-square-foot High Bay Research Facility will be located on North 19th Street near the university’s Centennial Complex. Facility laboratories will improve understanding of how oil companies can recover oil and gas.

The state of Wyoming is contributing $37.2 million for the facility, while another $16.3 million comes from private sources. An additional $9.2 million in private gifts will fund research equipment.

Private funding comes from Halliburton Co. (NYSE: HAL), Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE: XOM), Royal Dutch Shell plc (NYSE: RDS.A) and others in the oil industry.

The university expects construction to be completed by summer 2016.
