Wyoming pair angles for national exposure

The Eye has been watching as a couple of neighbors, Gary and Robin Edwards of Laramie, Wyo., have taken to national television with their series “Flyfishing Destinations.” We love it when folks from little ol’ Laramie hit the big time.

There’s still time to catch the last few installments of the 13-week series on Denver’s PBS outlet, KRMA-TV, Channel 6.

From the basics to the exotic, the Edwardses have taken viewers on a hemispheric tour of flyfishing destinations from the Bahamas (the quarry was bonefish), Mexico (dorado), upstate New York, as well as the more close-at-hand flyfishing hot spots in Colorado, Wyoming and Montana.

It’s more than just another “watch the host catch a lot of fish” show, in the words of PBS national marketing director Tom Carroll.

The series also includes hefty measures of travel lore, gourmet cooking and outdoor humor. This couple offers great balance, too: Gary is a pro, having logged an International Game Fish world record during his decades of fly-casting. His record: A 22-pound, 9-ounce Chinook salmon, caught on 2-pound test tippet.

Meanwhile, Robin is a newcomer — and watching her learn the finer points gives even the non-fishing Eye a comfortable point of reference.

Oh, and viewers can also learn a thing or two about tying flies during every show.

The catch of the day is up again this Sunday, April 23, with back-to-back installments airing on KRMA, PBS in Denver, at 6 and 6:30 p.m.
