One of the saddest moments in this year’s Winter Olympics was when Sven Kramer, a Dutch speed skater, was disqualified from a race and lost his chance for a second gold medal and apparently, half a million dollars.
No, he didn’t trip on his laces. Kramer obeyed a directive from his coach and moved into the wrong lane. Kramer was so far ahead in the race that there was no doubt that he was headed for the gold but a split second decision changed hisstory.
There is a lesson here for job searchers who have decided to plunk down money for a career coach, counselor, or executive search firm. There is absolutely nothing wrong with reaching out for help when a job search stalls. But, don’t forget to pay attention to your own internal knowing. In other words, don’t let a well-meaning coach send you off course.
