County workforce agency appoints manager to address nurse shortage

FORT COLLINS — The Larimer County Economic and Workforce Development office has appointed a manager to help address the shortage of nurses in the region. She began work today.

Carol Salter, a long time health care executive with Banner Health, joins the office as nursing shortage program manager. In that role, according to information from LCEWD, she will be charged with helping the region determine how to train or recruit more nurses into health care systems in Northern Colorado. She will work as a liaison among health care providers, educational institutions, accrediting bodies and the county.

“I feel so fortunate to join Larimer County Economic and Workforce Development to begin work to address the nursing shortage in our region,” Salter said in a written statement. “The fact that LCEWD has made this a priority and funded this new role shows its commitment to Larimer County and the region.”

The nursing shortage program is an outgrowth of the Northern Colorado Health Sector Partnership, created in 2013 to improve health within the area. The program is funded for the next three years, the department said. The Fort Collins Area Chamber of Commerce also contributed to the program.

“Our region has several initiatives underway to enhance economic competitiveness…,” said Evan Wendlandt, associate director of Larimer County Economic Development. “Bringing Carol Salter on to the team will help us identify potential funding streams and opportunities to assist with solutions to the nursing shortage in Northern Colorado,” he said.
