Colorado bankruptcies decline 12% in May

DENVER — Colorado bankruptcy filings declined 11.9% in May compared with the same period in 2020.

That’s according to a BizWest analysis of U.S. Bankruptcy Court data. The state recorded 646 bankruptcy filings in May, down from 733 a year ago. Year to date, bankruptcy filings totaled 2,971 statewide, down 20.9% from 3,757 recorded through May 2020.

Among counties in the Boulder Valley and Northern Colorado:

  • Boulder County recorded 14 bankruptcy filings in May, compared with 21 in May 2020. Year-to-date filings totaled 108, compared with 136 a year ago.
  • Broomfield recorded seven bankruptcy filings in May, compared with eight in May 2020. Year-to-date filings totaled 30, down from 45 in 2020. 
  • Larimer County filings totaled 36 in May, compared with 40 a year ago. Year-to-date filings totaled 142, down from 168 through May 2020.
  • Weld County bankruptcy filings totaled 45 in May, the same number recorded a year ago. Year to date, Weld County has recorded 219 bankruptcy filings, compared with 235 a year ago.
