Ault, North Weld County Water District seek to carve out portion of town from overlapping area

AULT — The Town of Ault and the North Weld County Water District are planning to exclude just more than 113 acres of land in the town limits from the water district’s boundaries.

The town and the water district jointly petitioned the Weld County District Court to exclude the properties in a filing Thursday. According to meeting documents with the water district in February, those properties fall within the district’s boundaries but are within town limits and already get their water through the town.

Ault Town Clerk Sharon Sullivan said residents who live in the overlapping area are paying two mill levies, so creating the exclusion would make those residents liable only to pay Ault’s mill levy. No other changes to service would come about from the exclusion.

The 113 acres proposed for exclusion is a sliver of the water district’s overall service territory, which is estimated at 181,916 acres across Weld County and Larimer County.

The exclusion primarily affects properties northwest of the Colorado 14-U.S. Highway 85 intersection. It does not include several agricultural parcels of land nearby that are owned by the city of Thornton for its water rights.

The water district was closed on Friday and unavailable for comment.
