Stapleton neighborhood announces new name: Central Park

DENVER — Denver’s Stapleton neighborhood — built atop the former Stapleton International Airport — will be renamed Central Park.

Neighborhood organization Stapleton United Neighbors announced the change Saturday, bringing to a close a longtime controversy over the Stapleton name. The airport and neighborhood were named after former Denver mayor Benjamin Stapleton, who served from 1923 to 1931 and from 1935 to 1947. Stapleton was also a member of the Ku Klux Klan.

That affiliation has long led to attempts to rename the neighborhood, but those efforts gathered traction in recent months. The neighborhood group began a process to rename the area in June, with multiple votes occurring.
