Gogo to lay off employees in Broomfield

BROOMFIELD — Gogo Inc. (NASDAQ: GOGO), a Chicago-based in-flight broadband connectivity firm with a major business unit headquartered in Broomfield, is eliminating about 145 jobs across its operations, including about 10 in Broomfield.

These layoffs come on the heels of a 600-worker furlough in April that impacted about 90 Broomfield employees. Certain furloughs and salary reductions are ongoing, as are other cost-cutting measures such as renegotiating terms with suppliers, delaying aircraft-equipment installations, deferring purchases of capital equipment, and reducing marketing and travel expenses, the company said.

“As the pandemic continues to impact commercial airline travel, we are taking additional actions as part of our comprehensive 16-lever strategy to reduce costs. Based on our current expectations of the scope and timing of a recovery in the industry and our Commercial Aviation business, reducing our workforce has become a necessary step,” Gogo CEO Oakleigh Thorne said in a prepared statement. “We do not take this action lightly, but we believe it is critical in our efforts to preserve our financial flexibility, while maintaining the quality of our service and relationships with our customers.”

The layoffs are expected to be complete by mid-August.

When asked whether additional layoffs could be in store for Gogo’s Broomfield office, Gogo spokesman Dave Mellin said in an email, “Not at this time.”

He added: “Obviously if there is another round of COVID that causes everything to shut down again like what happened in March-May, then we would have to evaluate the impact to the business and that might require further action, but barring something like that, we are not expecting any further layoffs here in Broomfield.”
