Coloradoan owner Gannett closes merger with GateHouse

The two largest newspaper chains in the U.S., Gannett Co. Inc. (NYSE: GCI) and GateHouse Media, closed their $1.2 billion merger earlier this week, creating a company owning 261 daily newspapers across the country.

The combined company, which is mainly run by former GateHouse executives but retains the Gannett name, expects to find $300 million in savings over the next year in overlapping advertising and newsroom jobs, according to previous statements from the companies.

In Colorado, the move brings the Coloradoan and the Pueblo Chieftain, formerly a GateHouse title, under the same corporate umbrella.
