BV RECon: More people than ever use real estate agents

BOULDER — Steve Murray, president and co-founder of real estate news and analysis firm RealTrends Inc., put on his Mythbuster hat to tell Realtors about an ongoing truth: more people than ever are using Realtors, and people are generally satisfied with the result.

Murray spoke at BizWest’s Boulder Valley Real Estate Conference held Thursday at the Embassy Suites in Boulder.

Murray, citing statistics from a recent RealTrends/Harris Insights survey, said access to technology and databases hasn’t diminished the worth of professional real estate agents.

Ninety percent of people who sold homes in 2018 used a Realtor, compared to 81 percent in 2001, the first year RealTrends conducted the survey.

Those who use Realtors for home sales include Millennials, who 92 percent of the time used an agent, he said.

Murray’s survey also showed that 92 percent of people rely upon referrals from a trusted person in order to find a Realtor.

Home sellers find that the Realtor’s ability to negotiate price is the most valuable service offered, he said. They also appreciate the list of homes available, information about comparable prices, information about the process of buying or selling and information about neighborhoods.
