Aerofest event to be Saturday in Longmont

LONGMONT — The 2019 AeroFest, with programming for students interested in science, technology, engineering and math, will take place on Saturday at the St. Vrain Valley Schools Innovation Center. The all-day, family friendly event is sanctioned by the Academy of Model Aeronautics and open to the public. The event includes:

  • Kids STEM Zone with a build tent and testing area, where young students will create chuck gliders to learn basic principles of flight and make event observation connections.
  • Outdoor drone racecourse, hosted by MultiGP, available for open flight and competition racing.
  • Hobby industry groups showcasing the latest products.
  • Food vendors and community viewing areas for non-flying guests of all ages.

The event is free to non-flying spectators. Additional pilot and general-admission registration information is available here. Hours are 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.

AMA clubs across the country will host events throughout the summer to celebrate the hobby, benefit local charities and highlight the importance of model aviation. Flying model aircraft is an effective tool for teaching STEM to kids and teenagers, according to event organizers. For many young people, aeromodelling leads to successful careers in aviation, aerospace science and engineering — jobs that are increasingly important in the region.

The SVVSD Innovation Center at 33 Quail Road in Longmont is a state-of-the-art learning facility where students are offered courses, work experience and research opportunities in areas like aeronautics, robotics, media and entrepreneurship.
