Boulder reaches agreement for development of St. Julien civic-use pad

BOULDER — Owners of the St. Julien Hotel and Spa have reached an agreement with the city of Boulder for development of the concrete pad adjacent to the hotel at 900 Walnut St.

The Boulder City Council Tuesday authorized the city manager to sign a management and operating agreement with the St. Julien for development of the concrete civic-use pad, which has sat unused since the hotel’s completion in 2005. Boulder officials in 1995 modified an urban-renewal plan to set aside 20 percent of a hotel for future use as a flexible space for nonprofits and community groups to use at a discount for civic and cultural functions.

The council last night voted unanimously to approve an agreement that calls for civic-use space on the first floor, with another three floors for hotel uses. The first floor would include 14,700 square feet of multi-use space and another 3,200 square feet for mezzanine/storage.

In Colorado, 1 in 3 women, 1 in 3 men and 1 in 2 transgender individuals will experience an attempted or completed sexual assault in their lifetime. During April, we recognize Sexual Assault Awareness Month with the hopes of increasing conversations about this very important issue.

Council members Tuesday debated how to define what organizations would be able to use the space, eventually directing city staff to develop a process to vet applicants.

Nonprofits and civic groups could use the space at a discount, with the city potentially subsidizing event rental, up to $250,000 per year.
