Healthy Steps

Take the Healthy Steps during your next visit to Fort Collins Museum of Discovery! Healthy Steps is a new exhibit at the museum made possible by the McKee Wellness Foundation. Together, we encourage you to climb to new, healthy heights and learn about Fort Collins on your way!

This physically engaging exhibit is the perfect way to jump start your discovery during your next visit to the museum. Did you know that your heart beats about 100,000 times in one day and about 35 million times in a year? During an average lifetime, the human heart will beat more than 2.5 billion times. By exercising regularly, you can make each beat count!

Healthy Steps, in addition to getting your heart beating, will also provide you with fun, educational information about Fort Collins history that corresponds with your step number. On step 55 you’ll discover that Disneyland opened on July 17, 1955, and Fort Collins served as one of the main inspirations for Main Street, USA in Disneyland. Dave Smith, Chief Archivist Emeritus for the Walt Disney Archives, stated, “There are two towns that can claim a relationship with Main Street, U.S.A. at Disneyland - Marceline, Missouri, where Walt Disney spent several years of his childhood, and Fort Collins, Colorado, where Main Street designer Harper Goff grew up.” Fascinating facts like these will entertain you throughout your Healthy Steps ascent.

The Healthy Steps exhibit is located on the stairs next to the Welcome Desk. When you arrive, ask a Discovery Agent for the Healthy Steps bookmark. After arriving at each level, you’ll emboss your bookmark at the designated stations to indicate your accomplishment of that level. Once your Healthy Steps bookmark is entirely embossed at each of the three stations, head back down the stairs to claim your prize!

Fort Collins Museum of Discovery and McKee Wellness Foundation know that your activity level matters to your heart – a lot! A low level of fitness doubles your risk of heart disease compared to more active people. The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise, or 75 minutes of vigorous activity, or a combination of the two, every week. Your heart benefits from any type of physical activity!

Fort Collins Museum of Discovery is located at 408 Mason Court and is open Tuesday through Sunday, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, with extended hours on Thursdays until 8:00 pm.
