Pilgrim’s Pride faces lawsuit over advertising

GREELEY — A lawsuit has been filed against Pilgrim’s Pride Corp. (Nasdaq: PPC) by advocacy groups disputing the chicken giant’s claims that its birds are fed “only natural ingredients.”

Food & Water Watch Inc. and the Organic Consumers Association filed a lawsuit against the Greeley manufacturer on Wednesday in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia in Washington, as first reported by Bloomberg.

The complaint questions Pilgrim’s Pride marketing that its birds are treated humanely and produced in an environmentally responsible way, as well as the natural ingredients component. It alleges that Pilgrim’s Pride keeps its birds in unsanitary and crowded warehouses, are abused, have health conditions, are raised with routine antibiotics to promote growth and are fed genetically-modified organisms. The plaintiffs are seeking an injunction and corrective advertising.
