Boulder hits greenhouse gas reduction goals early
BOULDER — Boulder has achieved its target goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions three years early.
Boulder reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 16 percent compared to a 2005 baseline, according to the city’s annual inventory.
The milestone is an important step to achieving the city’s larger goal of 80 percent reduction in communitywide emissions by 2050.

“A 16 percent emissions reduction is a significant step forward, particularly for a municipality, but the real heavy lift is yet to come,” Kendra Tupper, the city’s chief sustainability and resilience officer, said in a prepared statement. “The planet is on track to tip over the 1.5 degree Celsius increase mark far sooner than previously thought. Urgent, large-scale change is required to keep below this threshold. We need to do more, and we need to do it faster.”
