State board: Global Village Academy must close by June

FORT COLLINS — The Colorado Charter School Institute board of directors voted this week to formalize a determination that Global Village Academy in Fort Collins has failed to meet certain agreed-upon financial-viability and enrollment milestones.

As a result, the school will be begin the process of closing effective June 30, 2019, according to a board news release.

The school opened in 2013 as a dual-language immersion program authorized by CSI, Colorado’s statewide-charter authorizing entity. But during a charter renewal in 2017, CSI identified several financial and operational risks.

GVA-FC was granted a two-year contract renewal with specific contract milestones designed to address these deficiencies. CSI staff have determined that a plan submitted by the school did not demonstrate financial viability and thereby posed a significant risk to GVA-FC students and staff, the release said.

School leadership has informed families and staff of the board’s decision and will be hosting a meeting Dec. 17 to explore next steps.
