Basalt liquor decision may foreshadow 2019
BASALT — Whole Foods, in an effort to get an early lead on the ability to sell full strength beer in January when state law changes to permit grocers to obtain licenses, ran into a barrier at the Basalt town council this week.
The Aspen Times reported that the council voted unanimously to deny a license request. The request was for a license to sell 3.2 percent beer, which would have automatically converted to a license to sell full strength beer in January.
In what might foreshadow consideration of the same issue in other communities, the town board received a petition circulated by a nearby liquor store objecting to the license. Whole Foods countered with a petition of its own. The board came down on the side of the liquor store over the grocer.
