Greeley chamber to show GMO documentary

GREELEY — The Agriculture Committee of the Greeley Chamber of Commerce will screen “Food Evolution,” a documentary on the science of GMOs, on Tuesday, Nov. 14.

Doors open at 5 p.m. for a 5:30 p.m. showing in the Lindou Auditorium in the lower level of Michener Library on the University of Northern Colorado campus.  This event is free to attend. A moderated discussion will follow the film, according to a press release from the chamber.

In the GMO debate, both pro- and anti- camps claim science is on their side. “Food Evolution,” narrated by Neil DeGrasse Tyson, shows how easily misinformation, confusion and fear can overwhelm objective analysis, according to the announcement of the showing. “How do we ensure that our global food supply is safe, and that everyone has enough to eat? How do we feed the world while also protecting the planet? Has genetic engineering increased or decreased pesticide use? Are GMO foods bad for your health? And, most importantly, what data, evidence and sources are we using to approach these important questions,” sponsors of the movie said.

While the passionate advocates in the film are all concerned with the stewardship of safe, nutritious food for the planet, their differing views on what constitutes the truth have pitted them against each other, rendering the very subject of food itself into an ideological battleground.

Experts such as Mark Lynas, Alison Van Eenennaam, Jeffrey Smith, Andrew Kimbrell, Vandana Shiva, Robert Fraley, Marion Nestle and Bill Nye appear in the film. Together with farmers and scientists from around the world, the documentary attempts to separate hype and emotion from science in order to help audiences reach their own conclusions.
