Leighty replaces Smith as CEO of state’s homebuilders association

DENVER — The Colorado Association of Homebuilders said on Tuesday that Ted Leighty will become the statewide association’s next chief executive, replacing Scott Smith who is returning to the private sector.

Ted Leighty

Leighty is the vice president of government affairs for the Colorado Association of Realtors. He will begin the new job Nov. 1.

“Over the past decade, Ted has established himself as a leading association executive, government relations and communications specialist, and spokesman for the housing industry,” said Bruce Rau of Oakwood Homes, the board chairman for the CAHB. “With Ted’s leadership, homebuilders across Colorado will have an experienced and respected voice to represent our members and their customers at the state level.”

Leighty replaces Smith, who has led the association for the past three years. Smith will continue to be an association board member and a director of the executive, governmental affairs and political committees.

Leighty has been with CAR since May 2008.  He directed the association’s public policy efforts and government affairs, and CAR’s legislative policy committee and candidate endorsement process. Leighty has served as a congressional aide in the U.S. House of Representatives, specializing in business, housing, transportation and tax issues. He also has experience with local governments, chambers of commerce and other business groups on economic development issues.
