Inside Youbaby using technology to boost skin care

LAFAYETTE — Two sisters are looking to take their decades of knowledge in skin care and rejuvenation to the public by opening a state-of-the-art clinical spa that is affordable and accessible.

Youbaby is the brainchild of Susan Melching, who opened Susan Melching Skin Care in 1982 in Boulder, and her sister Nina Smith.

Melching eventually opted to sell her Boulder business a few years ago, but was looking to open a business that was focused even more on the clinical side of skin care but would have a name that wasn’t attached to hers, so she could eventually have an easy exit strategy. After coming up with the idea for Youbaby in 2011, she sat on the idea for years, until eventually deciding she and Smith could go into work together.

Business Cares: April 2024

In Colorado, 1 in 3 women, 1 in 3 men and 1 in 2 transgender individuals will experience an attempted or completed sexual assault in their lifetime. During April, we recognize Sexual Assault Awareness Month with the hopes of increasing conversations about this very important issue.

Selecting Lafayette as the place to launch Youbaby was a conscious one, Melching said. In addition to being ready to open a business outside of Boulder, Melching said that because tattoo removal is a major part of Youbaby’s offering, she wanted the new business to be in a place where people who have tattoos have the disposable income to afford a removal.

“About 67 percent of people who want tattoo removals are in their 30s, with kids and disposable income,” Melching said. “That’s Lafayette.”

To provide tattoo removals, Youbaby has the latest in laser technology: a laser machine that uses an intense speed to break up the ink, rather than burn it off. The result is a less painful process that requires fewer sessions than older technology with better results, Smith said.

“Because it moves so fast, the body can’t really source the pain,” she said. “It may feel uncomfortable, but it doesn’t last long.”

But Melching was quick to add that Youbaby isn’t against tattoos. In fact, it’s not just tattoo removals Youbaby does, but also permanent make up.

“One size does not fit all and one shape or style does not fit every person,” she said. “So we treat individuals as individuals and give them a look that makes best use of what nature has given them.”

Because more people are looking toward health and wellness and utilizing technology for it, Melching said she felt now was a good time to open a clinical spa that used the latest technology for skin care and rejuvenation.

The firm also tries to make it affordable, while maintaining quality. Smith said they’re not offering discounts or offers on sites like Groupon, in order to maintain the integrity of what they offer.

Since their grand opening Aug. 2, Smith and Melching said they are already seeing about 20 to 30 clients per week, many of whom are past clients from when Melching worked in skin care.

Even as the two grow their business, it remains a family affair.

“The biggest impetus to starting was Nina’s and my relationship,” Melching said. “Nina moved here and then we had our mom moved here. The three of us are a group and the two of us work together well.”
