Boulder receives grants for work on climate projects

BOULDER — The city of Boulder is partnering with other member cities of the Carbon Neutral Cities Alliance to share $350,000 in grant funding.

The money will go to two climate projects, one that creates strategies for accelerating the adoption of renewable heating and cooling systems and the other that develops a new language for energy codes to better promote energy efficiency.

Most homes in Boulder — and other cities — are using non-renewable natural gas or propane to heat their homes. The projects will look to remedy that by creating a plan to help more people adopt renewable heating and cooling.

Solar Operations and Maintenance for Commercial Properties

One key qualification to consider when selecting a solar partner to install your system is whether they have an Operations and Maintenance (O&M) or service department. Since solar is a long-term asset with an expected lifecycle of 30 plus years, ongoing O&M should be considered up front. A trusted O&M partner will maximize your system’s energy output and therefor the return on your investment.

The first project will be a partnership of New York, Washington, D.C., Burlington, Vt., and Boulder. The four cities will share $200,000 to work with major heating and cooling companies in the area to create programs to help homeowners replace fossil fuel appliances with high-efficiency, renewable energy heat pumps. Boulder will launch its initiative in early 2018.

The second project Boulder is involved in is with Seattle and New York, which will share $150,000 to improve the way energy codes evaluate heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems in order to promote energy efficiency. Creating a new compliance methodology would encourage builders to design innovative high-efficiency systems that would reduce fossil fuel consumption and energy usage.

In all, the Carbon Neutral Cities Alliance is made up of about 20 cities across the globe. Because it’s been a leader on climate issues, Boulder was selected as the CNCA meeting location for 2018.

“Partnerships through organizations like CNCA allow us to work with other cities across the globe and maximize resources to tackle this worldwide issue,” Kendra Tupper, chief sustainability officer, said in a prepared statement. “These innovative grant projects will, if successful, help achieve deep emissions reductions not just locally, but nationally and beyond.”
