School greenhouse may become real at Holyoke

An industry grant may enable a small, rural school district to add a greenhouse to its high school to support ag-related educational programs.

The Holyoke FFA chapter has received a $25,000 America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education grant from Monsanto.

The greenhouse is now half funded, and district officials hope to complete funding to facilitate a spring groundbreaking, according to a report in the Holyoke Enterprise.

Nearly 100 members and guests were in attendance at a back-to-school barbecue when the grant announcement was made. Local farmers nominated the school for the grant to support science, technology, engineering and math education in the district.

HHS students in the ag business class last year helped create a budget for the greenhouse, which was included in the application, according to the Enterprise’s report. While it’s the ag department that is behind the greenhouse project, the science department will use it as well.
